The Lion

The Asiatic lion (*Panthera leo persica*), also known as the Persian lion, is a subspecies of lion that once roamed much of the Middle East and India. Today, its population is restricted to the Gir Forest National Park in Gujarat, India. These lions are slightly smaller than their African counterparts and have a distinctive fold of skin along their bellies, which is not seen in African lions. Asiatic lions have a shorter, less developed mane, and their social structure and behavior can be a bit different from that of African lions.

Conservation efforts have been quite successful in increasing their numbers, but they remain endangered and are considered a conservation-dependent species. They face threats such as habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict, making ongoing protection and habitat management crucial for their survival.
